Abstract
Model transformation and refinement in between productand
process activities is the corner stone of computer-
aidedconcurrent product and process development. Conventionally,
feature recognition and extraction techniques were used
indeveloping feature-based model for process planning.
Howeverdue to the limitation and difficulty in feature
recognition, the goal for integrated product and process
development is not yet achieved. This thesis develops a
feature-based model refinementmethodology, including a model
refinement procedure and mechanisms, that is able to transform
feature-based molding product modelsinto feature-based mold
models to support computer-aided concurrentmolding product and
(1) the feature recognition difficulty iseliminated and thus
increases the efficiency of model refinement ,(2) the
consistency between product models and mold models can
bedynamically maintained that makes integrated product and
processdevelopment possible and (3) it supports various molding
productand process development activities such as cost
effectivenessevaluation, mold manufacturability assessment and
mold manufacturingprocess planning. The result of this research
enables computer-aidedconcurrent product and process development
and thus help increasesproduct quality and reduces product cost
and development time andeventually increases product
marketability.
